GWU to represent employees at British High Commission

Employees of the British High Commission are to be represented collectively by the GWU as the vast majority of employees joined the GWU and were organised in the Professionals, Finance & Services Section of the GWU.

This is the first time that Embassy employees are being represented by the Union. “It is an important milestone in the work of the Union’s section,” said Section Secretary Cory Greenland.

This week a GWU delegation met a delegation from the High Commission, whereby following necessary verifications the British High Commissioner notified the GWU that it is being recognised as the union duly representing the Embassy’s employees in all levels of the employee structure.

The union notified the High Commissioner of its intent to collaborate in a spirit of positive industrial relations to bring forward the interests of the employees and promote mutual understanding. The GWU delegation was composed of Mr Michael Parnis, Deputy General Secretary, Mr Cory Greenland Section Secretary and Mr Joe Mifsud, Acting Union Representative.

The High Commission was represented by H.E the High Commissioner Louise Stanton, Deputy Commissioner Carole Johnson and legal advisor Dr Peter Fenech.

Section Secretary Cory Greenland stated: “It is a very good thing that Foreign Embassy employees are considering being organised in a Union. I confirm there are other contacts currently underway for the Union to represent other employees in Foreign missions. It is a misconception that Embassy employees are not able to be union members and perhaps this is the right time for such employees to be actually part of a Union. It is therefore obvious that I extend an appeal to other local Embassies to join a Union.”
