BMIT inaugurates €3.5 million data centre at SmartCity Malta

BMIT Limited, Malta’s largest data centre operator, has officially opened a new €3.5 million data centre at SmartCity Malta.

The data centre, which was officially inaugurated by minister Christian Cardona, is built to the highest industry standards and using the most recent data centre technologies.

BMIT also completed the commissioning of a very high-speed dedicated network, linking its data centres in Malta, Italy and Germany together and to the Internet. Powered by global connectivity operators, this new network offers 40Gbps of connectivity, and provides customers with very high resiliency and capacity when connecting to the Internet.

“Through these two investments, our customers have access to the latest data centre technologies, in multiple data centres spread across Malta, Italy and Germany. Our new international network provides very high capacity and high performance connectivity across data centres and to the Internet and we are proud that we have partnered with leading global providers to make this possible,” BMIT chief executive Christian Sammut said.

“Additionally, we are using multiple fibre connections out of Malta and throughout our network, therefore providing the highest level of resilience one can aim for.”

Minister Cardona said that the new Data Centre is not only an investment for BMIT but also an investment for the business sector in Malta. He explained that the services provided by BMIT are crucial for businesses of all sizes, and especially those dependent on 24 hour online presence.

“This new data centre for BMIT confirms the growth in IT-oriented commercial entities based in Malta, and increases commercial confidence in the country itself.  BMIT is not only investing in infrastructure but also in quality. This provides peace of mind to operators seeking to establish their operations in Malta.  Moreover, BMIT is continuously investing in developing specific technical expertise to provide hosting and other clients with world-class service.  This continues to raise not just the company’s but also Malta’s reputation and attractiveness,” Cardona said.

Emerson Network Power, the world’s leading provider of critical infrastructure technologies and life cycle services for information and communications technology systems, were BMIT’s lead partner in the implementation of the SmartCity Malta data centre.
