Restaurants’ winter turnover increases by 4%

Restaurant turnover last winter increased by around 4% during the last winter period when compared to the previous year, a survey commissioned by the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association has shown.

55% of the 64 restauranteurs who took part in this survey reported revenue growth, with 37% reporting decreases and 8% reporting consistent revenue vis the same period last year.

The regions reporting the highest revenue growth were St Paul’s Bay, Bugibba and Qawra (8.7%), Valletta (6.7%) and Rabat and Mdina (4.9%). No region reported revenue declines.

Elsewhere, operational costs decreased by 3%, while payroll costs increased by 1%.

The survey shows a telling trend in the regions whose restaurants tend to employ foreign staff. 41% of employees in the restaurants surveyed in the Sliema-Gzira region and 36% of those surveyed in St Julian’s were foreign.

On the contrary, restaurants in Valletta and Mdina-Rabat tend to employ a local workforce – 84% of staff in both regions are Maltese.
