Gaming sector delivered €640 million direct contribution in 2015
Competitiveness minister says he wants to seek consensus with the opposition on laws
The gaming sector has delivered €640 million in direct contribution during 2015, Competitiveness Minister Manuel Mallia said this evening.
Taking part in a government listening session, the recently-appointed minister for digital, maritime and services economy said that the figure excluded the indirect contribution brought about by the sector.
“A rough estimate shows that the gaming sector contributes 11% of our gross domestic product, with around 5,000 workers employed,” Mallia said. The figure excludes indirect employment, such as legal and accountancy firms.
During 2015, the sector delivered a 7% economic growth, with the positive rhythm expected to be retained during this year.
The minister said that the financial services sector was an important one for Malta, warning against indulging in too much criticism that could end up being destructive.
Mallia, reinstated following the Cabinet reshuffle as a result of the Panama Papers revelations, also said that he wanted to seek consensus with the opposition.
Next week, the minister will be presenting a revamped free zones act. He said, that both government and opposition have been briefed by the technical team.
“Consensus is how politics should be done,” Mallia said.
The minister said he intends on following up with the white paper on estate agents, who will require a licence to operate. A meeting will be held in the coming days to continue discussing the legislation.
