Malta-Sicily interconnector ‘crucial for future sustainability’ - Chamber

The €182 million interconnector Malta-Sicily cable is an investment crucial for the future sustainability for Maltese industry, says the Malta Chamber of Commerce.

In a statement welcoming the signing of the agreement on Tuesday that will link malta to the European electricity grid, The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry said it has been advocating the urgency of this investment for the past three years, in its numerous positions on the energy situation on our islands.

“The Malta Chamber deems this investment crucial for the future sustainability of industry in Malta.  Cheaper and more competitive electricity for businesses as is provided in other countries is vital,” a spokesperson for the chamber said.

“The submarine cable link to the European energy grid should however not merely result in less expensive energy but it will enable Malta to considerably reduce its emissions as well as achieve a much higher level of security of supply,” the spokesperson added. “This must be seen in the overall Government strategy of energy generation and linked to the economic development and increasing energy needs of the country.”

The chamber also pointed out that furthermore, the grid will also offer the potential diversification of energy sources, adding that this is important in terms of environmental benefits for the Maltese population.

“It is also important to stress that whilst the cable will be beneficial, other viable sources of renewable energy should still be considered.”

The Malta Chamber augured “the swift conclusion of this project, for the development of a competitive energy market, allowing business to pool resources for energy self-sufficiency purposes.”

we definitely need cheaper energy but cheaper energy is not produced by enemalta and will therefore drive the grossly mismanaged company to ruin... Who's gonna pick up the €600+ million debt which is left behind... The Maltese people. And lets not forget some further debt with the building of the new power station... I wonder how these things are going to play out: new expensive power station to create expensive energy only to be cancelled out by cheap energy which can be imported through the (expensive) interconnector?
