[WATCH] People should vote for parties, not candidates
Saviour Balzan calls for a change in Malta's electoral system, so as to stop candidates seeking favour from people like the Gaffarena family.
In the wake of an ongoing political tit-for-tat over which party has groveled the most to the Gaffarenas, MediaToday managing editor Saviour Balzan has called for a change to Malta’s electoral system.
In his videoblog, Balzan said that people should get to vote for the party, rather than individual candidates. Through this electoral system – similar to those of Germany, France and the United Kingdom – political parties will choose and rank their candidates in each district. Depending on how many votes the party receives, these candidates will be elected to Parliament according to their rank.
Balzan argues that such a system would put an end to candidates from the same party fighting over the same constituents, and to candidates seeking out the aid of people like the Gaffarenas.
