Updated | Divers warned to keep away from Azure Window until site is considered 'safe'
Divers, mariners and bathers warned to stay away from the site which held the Azure Window until the necessary surveys and inspections have been carried out
Divers, mariners and bathers have been advised by authorities to keep a safe distance from the remains of the Azure Window until the “required surveys and inspections have been carried out.”
The notice comes after videos of the underwater ruins uploaded by user George Vassallo, as well as others, started to appear online over the weekend.
“Transport Malta, together with the Environmental Resources Agency and the Malta Tourism Authority declare the former Azure Window site as a cautionary area,” read a statement.
In addition to concerns over safety of the members of the public, the statement said that there were also conservation concerns that needed to be mitigated.
“Transport Malta has issued a notice to mariners to caution then when approaching the site around the former Azure Window in Dwejra. The recent collapse has caused a change in seabed and coastal topography of this area and is thus un-surveyed,” it said.
