Il-Mithna | 10 years in a windmill
The classic Il-Mithna restaurant opened its doors on Tuesday to celebrate 10 years of culinary success.
Situated in the heart of Melliha, Il-Mithna is housed in a 16th century windmill built by the Knights of St John. One of three mills in the area used to grind flour, it is the last remaining mill beautifully converted to create a wonderful dining experience reminiscent of bygone years.
Though the décor takes you back in time the cuisine is truly contemporary. Chef Parton Sandro Vella has been at the helm of this venture right from the start and prides himself on using the freshest local ingredients combining tantalising local and international flavours.
The à la carte menu offers a variety of dishes from all over the globe, traditional Maltese dishes such as local rabbit are served alongside an elegantly Frenched rack or lamb served with Moroccan spices along with a chick pea salad.
Some interesting pasta dishes are also available, including home-made ravioli stuffed with fresh pumpkin tossed with pine nuts, sundried tomatoes and fresh herbs served witn Parmeggiano shavings or a rabbit risotto made with fresh local rabbit, zucchini and fresh rosemary, cooked in red wine and aged balsamic vinegar, served with a Parma ham wafer.
The wine list features wines from all over the globe, including some local jewels. Prices range from €10 to €70 for the more discerning wine drinker, while a cellar collection is also available.
If you’re on a budget you can still make the most of the magnificent dining at Il-Mithna, opting for the set menu that offers a variety of starters, mains and desserts for just €15, with a glass of local wine served to patrons dining before 7:30pm.
Il-Mithna is open daily for dinner from 6pm onwards.
