Paranga celebrates sixth anniversary

The Definitive(ly) Good Guide To Restaurants In Malta & Gozo takes a look at Paranga in St George's Bay.

Paranga is one of the seven restaurants of the prestigious five-star InterContinental Malta and retains an excellent reputation amongst hotel guests and locals alike. When looking at the formula of this restaurant’s success, the obvious place to start is with it’s location.

Location

Paranga can perhaps boast one of the most desirable locations on the island as the restaurant actually sits on stilts in the sea in the charming St George’s Bay. Guests not only enjoy the idyllic view of the tranquil Mediterranean but in the summer months may also feel the crisp sea air on their faces. On a quiet day it is also possible to both see and hear the mesmerising waves lapping beneath the teak floor boards. As the restaurant is located close to shops and hotels it continually draws in a host of new clients whilst maintaining its loyal following amongst locals.

Ambience

There are many factors that contribute to the unique ambience, including the choice of furnishing, lighting and music. The furniture is contemporary in design; white tables, stylish chairs and designer lamps, large potted plants and funky heaters create a chic, stylish environment. This is enhanced by the subtle, ambient music and warm orange lighting which encourages guests to completely wind down and enjoy their meal. During the winter months a clear temporary enclosure enables the restaurant to remain warm whilst guests soak up the view.

Cuisine

Locally caught fresh fish and sumptuous Italian cuisine  is freshly prepared by Paranga’s highly talented new Italian chef, Massimo Casadei. Massimo recently arrived with a wealth of experience behind him, from one of InterContinental’s flagship properties, InterContinental De La Ville in Rome. He uses only the freshest ingredients to ensure that each of his innovative creations bursts with flavour. His aim remains in keeping with Paranga’s vision to offer traditional, simple, wholesome Italian food at a competitive price. All menus are created by employing the skills of both the kitchen staff and the food and beverage managers to ensure that all tastes are catered for. Both fish lovers and meat eaters will find something to satisfy their tastes. Starters include: Timballo di zucchine con crema di pomodoro e mozzarella filante (Timbale of zucchini filled with mozzarella in a basil flavoured tomato sauce) and Zuppa di fagioli borlotti con cozze (Borlotti beans soup with mussels).

For the main course guests may choose some fresh fish that can be prepared to their liking or a dish from the à la carte menu which includes a good choice of pasta, rice, meat and fish options. For example: Risotto all’ astice con gocce di balsamico (Risotto with lobster and tomato with a hint of balsamic vinegar) or Filetto di maiale al miele e peperonicino (Pork fillet cooked in a honey and chilli reduction.). A well thought out wine menu complements the cuisine.

The delicious desserts are made in house and designed to excite the taste buds. Traditional favourites such as tiramisù are offered alongside a good selection of  innovative treats such as Tortino al cioccolato bianco con salsa al pistacchio (Warm white chocolate tart served with a pistachio sauce).

Staff

Great thought has gone into choosing the staff at Paranga. They are all young, energetic, efficient and resourceful individuals that work together as a team. Being a part of the InterContinental Hotel Group means undergoing continual in-house training. All staff members are taught to share local knowledge with their guests to help them understand and feel a part of the Maltese culture. Staff are also encouraged to share their passions and listen to their guests personal interests. This helps to build a wonderful relationship where guests feel heard and looked after. The kitchen team also undergo rigorous training and are included in both the design and presentation of the dishes. With managers and staff working so closely together, a harmonious working environment is created and individuals feel proud of their work. This feeling is translated to the customers.

Weekend Lunches

Weekends are a time to relax and be with family in Malta and Paranga happily caters to just that. Families gather to enjoy a drink at the stylish bar followed by a leisurely lunch in an inviting environment.  Parents chat happily over a bottle of wine as the children play on the beach. There is a sense of timelessness as the staff intuit the guests needs and desires. In the summer a more casual dining area is available upstairs at the Upper Deck @ Paranga where guests may enjoy some delicious pizzas.

The unique Paranga deserves its popularity.
