World Asthma Day conference to highlight asthma control

The Maltese Asthmatic Society (SAM) is to address the latest facts, figures, and medical advice on asthma during a conference which will be free of charge for the public. 

The conference will be held at The Phoenicia Hotel as part of World Asthma Day on Tuesday 6 May 2014, and speakers will include the Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Chris Fearne, Shadow Minister for Health Mr Claudio Grech, Director of the Health and Disease Prevention Directorate Dr Charmaine Gauci and health specialists Dr Etienne Grech and Dr Martin Balzan.

“Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases, with around 300 million people affected around the world. Asthma is increasing especially in children, and, according to some reports, Malta has the highest prevalence rates in Europe of persons suffering from asthma and other respiratory conditions,” said Maltese Asthmatic Society President Stephen Healey.

“By increasing awareness and offering support to asthmatics and their relatives, the Maltese Asthmatic Society aims to relieve the suffering associated with this chronic illness so that individuals with this condition can enjoy an unrestricted, better quality life,” said Healey.

On Saturday, 3 May 2014, SAM is organising educational and fund-raising activities at Bisazza Street in Sliema. Society volunteers will be distributing informational material on asthma while overseeing the sale of SAM mascot soft toys and educational books to generate funds for this NGO.   

Founded in 2004 by Prof Stephen Montfort, the society has grown to include around 200 members with a committee consisting of eight volunteer committee members. They deliver talks around the country, focusing in particular on schools, radio stations and television programmes.

The Society also organises free public meetings every quarter as part of its outreach and support services. These public events are held at Mater Dei’s Hospital’s Asthma Clinic and include information talks by health professionals, such as medical doctors or pharmacists.
