Swim Aid 2015 will be held on Saturday the 5 September 2015 and will see a team of seven swimmers challenge the 30km of wide open waters from Marsalforn, Gozo to Sliema.
The objective of Silver Lining Swimming Club is to encourage people to win over their physical challenges and to highlight how effective sport is in helping to develop one’s sense of purpose and gain confidence in one’s abilities.
The aim is to constantly increase the number of participants and give an equal opportunity to all. Silver Lining Swimming Club has already started working with a small number of physically disabled young athletes who are determined to reach their swimming goals.
Silver Lining Swimming Club is mainly involved with teaching the basics of swimming and instilling a sense of confidence in their abilities. Swimming sessions are held at the Tal-Qroqq National Pool Complex, Inspire Indoor Pool in Marsascala and the Ta’ Qali Indoor Pool.
Swim Aid was launched in 2011 via its first initiative, Swim to See; a 37km swim around Gozo to help the Malta Guide Dog for the Blind Foundation.
Enough funds were collected to buy two specialised dogs from abroad and have them trained. In 2012, Swim Aid once again swam around Gozo to help Joseph Bugeja, who had lost three limbs in a work-related incident. Funds collected allowed for a special prosthetic arm to be purchased as well as an electric car to further help him with his mobility.
The general public is invited to join the members of Swim Aid on Saturday 5 September from 2pm at Sliema Pitch for an afternoon of sport and entertainment whilst supporting a good cause. All proceeds of the afternoon will go directly in support of Swim Aid, whilst those who can’t make it can contribute by sending an SMS to 50618990 - €6.99 or 50619289 - €11.65 or by visiting www.swimaid2015.org.
