Suspended jail term for stabbing Libyan, accused of lawyer’s murder

A man was convicted to two months in jail, suspended for a year, after he was found guilty of causing serious injury to a Libyan man, currently facing murder charges.

Daniel Briffa, 25, of Birkirkara, was found guilty for seriously injuring Libyan Nizar El-Gadi, jailing him for two months, suspended for a year.

El-Gadi is the estranged husband of lawyer Margert Mifsud, whom he stands accused of murdering.

The court heard how Briffa had stabbed El-Gadi over a cycling incident allegedly in self-defence.

Lawyer Chris Cardona argued that his client had used a knife out of fear for  El-Gadi, who became aggressive during an argument over the damage done to his car in February 15, 2009.
