Charged with stealing cash from elderly man’s home

A man who was charged with stealing cash from an elderly man’s home claimed to have been ‘framed’ by a prostitute who allegedly stole the keys to the victim’s home, putting the blame on him.

Johan Sultana, 30 of Hamrun was remanded in custody this morning, despite his lawyer's claim that his client was being "framed" by a prostitute, identified as Brenda Mallia, who is currently wanted by the police.

Sultana is being charged with stealing more than €2,500 from the old man's home, and of relapsing.

Lawyer Joe Brincat who appeared for Sultana, claimed that his client was being framed by Mallia, as it was she who went with the victim and stole his keys in the process to commit the crime.

According to Brincat, his client was lured by Mallia to pick her up from the old man's address and drive off, as she handed him a "packet."

But prosecuting officer Inspector Elton Taliana replied that contrary to what Sultana is claiming, strong evidence places the accused at the old man's home during the theft.

He argued that the prosecution have "ample evidence" to show that Sultana and Mallia acted "in tandem" to commit the crime.

Johan Sultana was remanded in custody.
