Young driver jailed two years for driving without licence, insurance

A 21-year-old driver was sentenced to two years in jail in two separate judgments by Magistrate Francesco Depasquale, for driving when his license was suspended, and without any insurance cover.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale jailed 21-year-old Josef Borg of Hamrun to two years in jail, handing down two separate one-year jail terms after finding him guilty of driving when his licence had been suspended, and without insurance cover.

Borg was charged twice for being caught driving in Marsa and in Dingli on two separate occasions last February and April.

In handing judgment, Magistrate Depasquale said that he was imposing a jail term given that Borg was a relapser and for having disobeyed police orders.

Borg was further disqualified for driving for the next two years.

The sentence has a lot to do with him being a relapser and repeat offender and not just because of driving without insurance cover and a suspended licence. Also for ELWENZU the sentence only starts to takes effect when he comes out of jail!

Reading this article suggests that Borg will not be able to drive (disqualified) for all the time he is in prison. Pretty freakin' obvious I guess.
