Police reply to MT story on Borg Cardona investigation
Police invoke right of reply to MaltaToday report on alleged pressure from senior Police officers to stop investigations on Industrial Tribunal chairman George Borg Cardona.
Reference is being made to an article entitled "Magistrate summons police officers to explain alleged pressure to stop investigation". As per Article 21 of Chapter 248 of the Laws of Malta , This is a reply from the Police Force to the mentioned article.
Reference is made to a report published in your portal on 23 January 2013 titled "Magistrate summons police officers to explain alleged pressure to stop investigation".
The Police Force would like to clarify that contrary to what was reported in this article, Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera did not order, in her decree of 16 January, 2013, for Assistant Commissioner Raymond Zammit and Superintendent Antonello Grech to appear in court in order to tender an explanation regarding the 'alleged pressure exerted on Inspector Ransley to stop investigating the chairman of the Industrial Tribunal, George Borg Cardona'.
On the other hand, it does not result that Inspector Ransley's immediate superior, Superintendent Antonello Grech instructed him to cease or discontinue with the investigations ordered by Magistrate Scerri Herrera. As for Assistant Commissioner Raymond Zammit, it transpires that he never spoke on this matter with Inspector Ransley.
In fact, Superintendent Grech had only told Inspector Ransley to mark time with the investigation and this following complaints made by Mr Borg Cardona regarding the way the investigation was being carried out by Inspector Ransley. This is in order to evaluate the situation and direct further as to how the investigation should further continue. All this happened a few days before Inspector Ransley had to tender evidence before the Magistrates' Courts.
Suffice to note that this investigation has continued and is still ongoing.
