Prime Minister denies suggestions that secret service chief's accident was covered up
Lawrence Gonzi: claims that MSS head's incident was kept hidden for six months by police a 'fabrication'
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has refuted suggestions that criminal steps against the head of the Malta Security Service were suspiciously quashed, over a six-month period since Godfrey Scicluna was involved in an "involuntary" accident.
MSS head Godfrey Scicluna is expected to face proceedings after he ran over an elderly man, who died on Friday of natural causes.
The accident took place in June 2012, but when MaltaToday inquired with the Commissioner of Police last week, John Rizzo said he was unaware of the incident and that criminal steps would be taken shortly.
Gonzi today refuted suggestions that the incident had been deliberately hidden away from the course of justice: "No I don't think this was hidden. Whoever said this has fabricated this claim. The police are investigating and if there is responsibility for the case, steps will be taken. The police have taken steps so nothing was hidden away," Gonzi said.
The prime minister is responsible for home affairs and police.
