Somalis plead not guilty to rape charges
Two Somali men arraigned in court after an Italian woman tells the Police she was raped by a number of foreigners.
Abdiraman Abukar and Liban Mohamoud, both 26, pleaded not guilty to raping an Italian woman last Monday in Hal Far.
The two men were arraigned in court earlier this afternoon, charged with violent indecent assault, holding the 21-year-old woman against her will, harassing her, offending public morals and slightly injuring her.
The men also pleaded not guilty to stealing her mobile phone.
Mohamoud was also charged with driving a car without a licence and breaching bail condition. Abukar, who had been found guilty of raping another woman, was also charged with relapsing.
Police Inspector Yvonne Farrugia opposed bail, insisting that there were several witnesses to the incident including the victim herself.
The court, presided by Magistrate Neville Camilleri, was also informed that the Italian woman had identified the two men as her rapists.
While issuing a protection order for the young woman and her family, Magistrate Camilleri remanded the two men in custody arguing that they were not reliable.
Camilleri also ordered that Abukar be given all necessary medical attention in prison given his medical condition. Abukar has a pipe inserted in his stomach.
