A 29-year-old woman is in critical condition after she crashed her car into the sea earlier this morning at the Gzira yacht marina.

The woman drove to the yacht marina to give a lift to a 40-year-old Turk who works at the marina when she reversed into the sea. It appears that the man - who resides in Birkirkara - had already got out of the car when he realised the woman was falling into the sea.

He was the first to jump into the sea to try and rescue her but the murky conditions did not help him.

Police officers who were first on the scene of the incident dived into the sea to save the woman who was still trapped in the car.

Assisted by a volunteer diver because of the dim visibility conditions, the two officers managed to get the woman out of the car who was immediately assisted to by a Mater Dei ambulance crew.

CPR was performed on site as the woman was confirmed to be in critical condition.

Police investigation is ongoing.
