Pet shop fire closes Naxxar road

Labour Avenue in Naxxar closed following a fire that broke out in Zoomanji, a pet shop specializing in exotic animals.

Naxxar's main thoroughfare Labour Avenue has been closed this evening as the Civil Protection Department was called in to contain a fire that broke out in Zoomanji, a pet shop specializing in exotic animals.

Reports indicate the cause of the fire could have been a short-circuit in a water fountain.

No injuries were reported until the time of going to print, but a number of animals kept at the shop are understood to have perished in the incident. Zoomanji is known to stock exotic pets such as iguanas, monitor lizards, tarantulas, scorpions, along with a large array of caged birds.

The shop is adjacent to a local branch of Banif Bank, and surrounded by residential homes and apartments.

Labour Avenue was closed to traffic on both lanes until late yesterday evening.

Police investigations are underway.

HAVE ANY SUCH EXOTIC ANIMALS ESCAPED FROM THE SHOP TO POSE A THREAT TO THE RESIDENTIAL HOMES NEARBY? WHY SHOULD SUCH SHOPS BE ALLOWED TO OPERATE SO CLOSE TO RESIDENTIAL AREAS AND CRAMMED WITH POOR ANIMALS WHO HAD NO CHANCE TO ESCAPE THE FIRE AND SMOKE. WHERE ARE THE INSPECTIONS OF SUCH PREMISES AND WHAT ARE ANIMAL RIGHTS DOING TO ENSURE THAT PETSHOPS COMPLY WITH MIMINUM STANDARDS OF SAFETY FOR THE ANIMALS THEY KEEP CAGED IN.

haven't these people ever heard of over load and current leakage circuit breakers, which would prevent such events from happening?
