Driver’s licence suspended after assault on constable
An argument between a truck driver and a police constable led to the driver being fined €1,300 and have his driving licence suspended for three months.
Marius Camilleri, 53, was found guilty of driving dangerously, slightly injuring PC Colin Spiteri and relapsing.
The argument ensued after Camilleri attempted to go against police orders.
On 21 October 21, 2004 a serious traffic accident in Gudja led to Civil Aviation Road in Luqa being closed for traffic. Traffic was being diverted and the truck driver refused to comply with police directions, stating that the truck was too large to go through the designated diversion. An argument ensued between the driver and the officer during which the accused threatened the officer and drove towards him in a dangerous manner.
Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona held that while deploring the aggressive attitude of the officer, this did not excuse the behaviour of the driver who should have been controlled his frustration given the events that led to the traffic diversion.
