75-year-old’s Maruti overturns on impact when crossing over carriageway while traffic lights were switched off

An elderly man, 75, was seriously injured in a crash at Tal-Barrani road, Zejtun this morning in an accident that happened at around 7:25am.

At 11:30am, the police said the man was in danger of death.

The accident took place at the intersection to where the traffic lights were reportedly switched off at the time.

The man was driving a Maruti 800, when he was hit by a VolksWagen Golf, driven by a Marsa man, 48, driving towards Birzebbuga.

The Maruti, at that point crossing over the carriageway into Zejtun, was overturned on impact and pushed into a wall. The trapped driver was rescued by Civil Protection rescuers which had to cut the car's top to evacuate the man.

The driver of the other vehicle was not hurt, but both vehicles were extensively damaged. The southbound carriageway of Tal-Barrani road is closed.

T.M. should be much more responsible in keeping our roads safe. A case in point is Fleur De Lys roundabout. Work started last November to embellish the area, the road was dug to install new service for the lighting of the 7 directional bollards on the traffic islands and the general lighting. In March works halted, the only thing that was done was the….

…. fixing of 3 normal reflective directional signs without light the rest is in pitch darkness. Is T.M. going back to the old fashioned signs just to get rid of the maintenance headache? Another concern is the lack of proper floodlighting on some zebra / pelican crossings. Our safety should be much more important than T.M.’s carelessness or economisations.
