Mobile squad, ALE officers confiscate ammunition planned for Egypt

Anonymous tip leads police to find and confiscate ammunition found in a car planned to be sold in Egypt.

A joint operation between officers from the Mobile Squad and the Administrative Law Enforcement (ALE) led to the discovery and confiscation of ammunition found in a car, planned for transportation.

In a brief statement, the police said it had received an anonymous tip.

A boat and a waiting car, used to transport the ammunition to the port, were stopped at the harbour.

It appears that the ammunition, shotgun shells, were destined to Egypt for hunters, MaltaToday has learnt.

This newspaper is informed that it is not the first time that shotgun shells were trafficked to Egypt, as hunters are no longer allowed to leave the island with shotgun shells.

Therefore, they buy their ammunition in Egypt before they start their hunting trip. It appears that such ammunition would be sold at  €100 per 100 shells. Normally, Maltese shotgun shells are sold at between €30 and €40 for the same quantity.
