Nizar el Gadi has been denied bail after the Attorney General and Inspector Keith Arnaud heavily objected to granting bail to the 34-year-old Libyan accused of having murdered his estranged wife and lawyer Margaret Mifsud.

The case dates back to April 2012 when Margaret Mifsud, a lawyer and judicial assistant was found dead in mysterious circumstances in Bahar ic-Caghaq.

Taking the witness stand, Arnaud objected to the bail request filed by el Gadi's lawyer. He insisted that the man had been "arrogant, presumptuous and provocative towards the police".

A magistrate had found el Gadi guilty of threatening officers including Arnaud himself and a police sergeant. He had told the officer that he would look for him in order to get his revenge.

The defence has however argued that el Gadi held every right to be granted bail and should be given the opportunity to clear his name. His lawyer reminded the court that the accused had no parental rights over the children and had no right to visit them.

The Attorney General also objected to the granting of bail, reminding the court that the accused had no fixed address and his last residence was a hotel.

El Gadi's lawyer however argued that with the help of the embassy a fixed residence will be found for the Libyan and the court will be duly informed.

Judge Lawrence Quintano is expected to announce his decision later on today.

It will be the biggest SHAME in court if you give him bail.
