Footballer requests bail over baby's attempted murder

Taking the witness stand, Nigerian Akande Williams told the court that he cannot afford to pay a high deposit for bail.

Lawyer Maurizio Cordina stated that the AG's office is not against the granting of bail however stringent conditions need to be set. These included the deposit of €5000, signing  a bail book twice daily and not leaving Gozo apart from when he has court.

Judge Lawrence Quintano read the submissions made by defence lawyer Joseph Ellis who is currently abroad. The defence argued that the only issue concerning the requested bail conditions is the financial aspect.

Taking the witness stand Williams pleaded that there is no way he can pay a deposit of €5000 as his wife is currently pregnant and the couple cannot afford such a high deposit.

The Nigerian footballer stands accused of the attempted murder of 14 month old Maleek Olowoshile on 15 April when the  baby had been rushed to hospital allegedly suffering from a shaken baby syndrome. The accused had been baby sitting his girlfriend's son while she was at work.

Judge Quintano granted the accused bail against a deposit of €5,000 and a guarantee of €15,000.
