Police Inspector Angelo Gafa' has been transferred to the Security Services. His transfer forms part of the overhaul of the Security Services which is currently being carried out by the government.
Gafa', who is the top police prosecutor, for the past seven years served as a police inspector within the Economic Crimes Unit. He joined the Police Corps through the graduate-recruitment scheme and holds a Masters of Arts in Public Policy.
The Economic Crimes Unit includes various types of fraud, corruption, customs-related crimes such as smuggling, and breaches of intellectual property rights and related areas.
His role at the ECU has led Gafa' to lead prosecution in top cases such as the Enemalta oil scandal and the case against former Sliema deputy mayor Silvio Zammit who is facing charges of bribery and trading in influence. The accusations concern his role in an alleged request for a €60 million bribe to influence tobacco legislation that was being spearheaded by John Dalli when he was European Commissioner.
Gafa' had also led the interrogation of former Nationalist mayor Nikki Dimech in relation to bribery charges.
