Thief jailed for four years

St Julian's resident given a four-year jail term for hold ups in shops in the locality.

Mark Saviour Borg, 45, from St Julian's, was imprisoned for four years after admitting to hold ups on ice-cream vendors and a pastizzeria.

Magistrate Carol Peralta heard Borg explain how on 11 March at around 5.45pm, he stole cash from Champ's Pastizzeria.  

The shop is owned by George Fenech. The accused also held salesgirl Katelina Vasileva Marinova against her will.

On 31 March at around 12.30 am, Borg held Chanelle Scicluna against her will at the Gelateria Lungomare while he emptied the cash register. He returned to the same outlet on 10 April at 10.30 pm, when he detained Erica Farrugia and again stole cash.

The accused also admitted to stealing cash money and mobile top up vouchers from the shop 8 Till Late on 6 April at 11 pm. During this theft he held Daniel Thomas Calleja against his will.

Inspectors Joseph Mercieca and Fabian Fleri prosecuted.
