Updated | Explosion at 12th May fireworks factory

Police confirm two men injured in the explosion caused by the mixing of chemicals.

Two persons were injured in an explosion at the 12th May fireworks factory in Haz-Zebbug.

Official sournces have confirmed that the two men suffered burns. The two men are a 57-year-old man from Ta' Xbiex and a 33-year-old man from Msida. The elder man suffered bad burns on his upper part of the body and is in critical condition while the younger one suffered slight burns.

Both men receiving first aid on site and both remained conscious. They have now been taken to Mater Dei Hospital.

Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia, an avid supporter of the Zebbug parish feast and a fireworks enthusiast, rushed to the scene of the incident as well.

No one else was involved as both men were alone at the time of the incident.

According to initial reports, the explosion occurred at 4.15pm during the mixing of chemicals used for colours.
