Former drug addict's reform awarded by court

Former drug addict's efforts to change lifestyle awarded by magistrate who pledged her support.

The efforts of a 22-year-old homeless girl to come off drugs were rewarded when a court handed her a probational term rather than imposing a prison sentence.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard how Sarah Zammit came off drugs when the court gave her the chance to change her life in March this year.

The case dates back to 13 January 2013 when the youth admitted to stealing food items worth €233 from James Caterers and to living off prostitution.

A drug addict for nine years, she faced social issues when her parents split up and neither of them wanted her. Later a 40-year-old man offered her refuge and the two started living together. She had resorted to prostitution to be financially support herself.

When arraigned, Sarah voiced her wish to come off drugs. She spent time at Mount Carmel's forensic unit and with the help of probation services she started a residential programme with Caritas on 10 March. Earlier in June, the agency declared Zammit clean from substance abuse after she stopped receiving methadone.

Magistrate Scerri Herrera expressed her satisfaction at the youth's efforts. The magistrate held the progress of such youths is followed and monitored and the court will continue to help motivate others to follow in Zammit's steps.

"Everyone has a right for a second chance and an opportunity to sort their lives. People who strive to leave the criminal life should be helped," the magistrate said.

Zammit was granted a probationary period of three years.

Inspector Spiridione Zammit prosecuted.
