Container carrying contraband cigarettes intercepted in Malta
In the second case in as many weeks, over 10 million contraband cigarettes are intercepted in Malta, the Customs Department says.
Customs officials intercepted a container full of contraband cigarettes and stopped it from reaching its destination in Europe.
This was the second interception in as many weeks, the Customs said. The latest container to be intercepted arrived from the Persian Gulf to another EU country.
The container was officially carrying 682 boxes of outdoor lanterns, however the customs officers discovered that it was carrying 10,590,000 contraband cigarettes, which were confiscated.
It is calculated that around €10 billion are lost in taxes annually in the EU because of this illegal activity.

Is it safe to assume that these ciggies will be fed to the incinerators, or will they mysteriously STILL find their way onto our streets?
