Teenager in need of cash steals motorbike

A 16-year-old youth pleaded guilty to stealing a motorbike claiming he needed cash.

A 16-year-old youth from Birgu, pleaded guilty to stealing a motorbike, claiming that he needed cash. He was placed on probation.

The youth stole a Yamaha V80 from Birgu, on 21 July 2013 at around 8pm. Subsequently he sold it to his friend, who was apprehended by the police and charged with driving the bike without insurance and licence.

Magistrate Anthony Vella placed the youth on probation for three years and banned the publication of his name as he is a minor. The youth is also forbidden from applying for a driving licence in the next year.

The bike was returned to its rightful owner.

The youth who bought the bike is expected to be charged with buying stolen property.

Inspector Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted. He explained to the court that the youth had collaborated with the police, describing the incident as a folly of youth.
