Drug addict charged with hold-up remanded in custody
27-year-old remanded in custody after last Sunday's hold-up in Birkirkara
Darryl Luke Borg, 27 of Birkirkara, was remanded in custody after being charged with a hold-up inside a shop in Triq Mons Alfred Mifsud in Birkirkara last Sunday.
The court heard how Borg waited outside the Convenience Shop until one of the two employees inside the shop pulled down the shutter.
At that point, Borg pulled the door up and walked into the shop holding a firearm, demanding cash. He made away with an undisclosed sum of between €700 and €1300.
Borg, who suffers from a serious drug problem, was arrested by the police after CCTV footage showing him escape from the scene was anaylsed.
The firearm used in the hold-up was not found.
He was also charged with holding employees Franklyn Grech, 18 and Sue Ellen Cassar, 31, against their will and relapsing.
Magistrate Gabriella Vella refused a request for bail and remanded Borg in preventive custody.
Inspectors Elton Taliana, Keith Arnaud, Joseph Mercieca and Carlos Cordina prosecuted. Dr David Camilleri and Joseph Gatt appeared for the accused.
