A French woman, 23, was rushed to the Gozo General Hospital after injuring herself when she jumped off the Azure Window in Gozo.

The rescue operation was carried out by members of the Police force and members of the Civil Protection Department.

According to police sources, the woman hurt her back after she jumped off the cliffs at Dwejra Bay, diving into the sea.

This is the third French tourist in four days to be involved in an incident out at sea in Gozo. The other two French nationals, a 17-year-old girl and 53-year-old man, lost their lives when they found themselves in difficulty while swimming.

In a separate incident, the Police have reported that a 4-year-old boy was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital after he fell off an escalator at a Fgura complex. The boy's medical condition is not yet known.

The boy is from Qormi.

What is the cost of stupidity? We were all young but how many of us were so stupid to go and jump of high cliffs seeking trills when they have no knowledge of the area or correct way to land. Then they get injured and paralysed out of their own sheer ignorance and wreck their lives and if they could they would sue the government because the government needs to protect them from themselves as they are incapable of thinking about the consequences of their actions!

Another point -is there no restrictive fencing not to allow people actually to access a point whereby they are enabled to jump into the sea from this area-as this area is also dangerous due to the height and the possibility of someone accidentally slipping .Did she scale the rock-face before jumping ?

FAO L ATTARD You are perfectly entitled not to agree but what on earth makes you think that the services for SAR and ERT operations are "free?"As most assuredly you and I along with every tax-payer are subsidising their excellent -and at risk to themselves-services .A lot of countries -including the UK -now onpass the cost of such resue services to the person(s) rescued when it is clear that the rescue was required due to sheer negligence ,gross stupidity and failure to abide by and comply with very basic safety measures and equipment and also not applying that most elusive and uncommon of all the senses -common sense!

Are these French mad or something. Most accidents occurring in Gozo involve French nationals. Who is sane to jump from on top of the Azure Window to the sea. ??

@pmurray, I don't agree. Being hurt in the back is punishment enough for an undoubtedly foolish act. That said, I am not sure if there is actually a fee for an SAR operation? In the case of rescue of ships at sea there certainly is.

I agree with pmurray.

Maybe her jumping off the cliff had an ulterior motive ?

Tourists should receive some form of information about laws in Malta. People should be allowed to jump with a licence and fee otherwise BOOK EM`

Whatever the reason she jumped off this site she should be charged with wasting police time and for cost of the SAR and ERT services
