Workshop fire destroys five cars

Five cars were destroyed in a fire that spread through a workshop in Triq ix-Xwieni, Marsa.

The incident happened at around 8:30am.

Preliminary investigations found that the owner, a 37-year-old mechanic and panel beater from San Ġwann, had been carrying out welding works. At one point he walked to another garage across the street to talk to a colleague when he noticed smoke coming out of his working.

Attempts to control the flames using a fire extinguisher were futile and it was only once members of the Civil Protection Department arrived on site that the blaze was put out.
