Chef charged with biting police officer
Chef with a clean criminal record handed suspended jail term after biting a police officer during a brawl.
Ian Saliba, a 29-year-old chef, was handed a suspended jail term after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer in Paceville.
On Monday an inebriated Saliba was in Paceville when he got involved in an argument with his girlfriend.
Upon seeing this, police officers intervened to calm the argument, however Saliba became violent towards them and bit one of the officers.
Police Inspector Bonello told the court that after sobering up, the accused collaborated with the police. He also had a clean criminal record.
The accused admitted to the charges of having violently resisted arrest, disobeyed police orders and injuring an officer. He apologised to the police in court.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke handed him a five-month jail term, suspended for a year.
Lawyers Arthur Azzopardi and Chris Grima appeared for the accused.
