Four Maltese nationals were arrested last night in the Italian northern city of Verona over a series of thefts committed in the city centre.

In all, 11 persons were arrested and accused of aggravated theft and four Maltese citizens were among those arrested, the Italian news agency, ANSA, reported.

The Maltese citizens who were on holiday in Verona decided to have a go at shoplifting in the city center, ANSA reported.

They were given a suspended sentence of three months and 15 days in jail. Two Moroccan women were also arrested for theft from a supermarket and were sentenced to three months in jail.

Furthermore, a gang of five Romanians was surprised while stealing fuel from a tank on a farm.
