A man was injured after being shot at during an attempted hold-up outside an ATM in at Malta Skyparks.

The man, believed to be in his 70s from Qormi, was shot through the windscreen.

The incident took place while the man was accompanying another person, 64 of Marsa, believed to be handling a large amount of cash after leaving a Bank of Valletta branch. One of the men resisted the robbers, who were said to be wearing balaclavas.

A witness said the victim was drenched in blood, as an ambulance took him away from the site just after 11am.

According to sources, nothing was stolen from the victims. It appears that the two robbers, driving a Peugeout, collided into the Renault blocking the victims' car. Two masked men got out of the car, one armed with a knife and the other with a sawn-off shotgun. The driver was shot to his face at a very close distance while the passenger was slightly injured with a knife.

The passenger is currently with the crime scene investigators, describing how the events unfolded.

Shortly after midday, the police found the Peugeot abandoned behind the Gudja cemetry, with the passenger door open and a broken window.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the getaway car had been stolen. The number plates do not match the car's registration.

The car was found after a young woman reported seeing a car left with its passenger door open in Gudja. Coincidentally, a car of the same make belonging to her father was reported stolen last week. It was however confirmed that the car did not belong to her father.

Forgive me if sometimes I tend to wonder whether crime pays. If one commits a crime, one may not even be caught and charged; if one is charged, one may not be found guilty if one has a good lawyer or the police did not find enough evidence to convince a jury; if one is found guilty, one may get a suspended sentence or probation; if one goes to prison, one only serves 8 out of every 12 months; one may even serve less if one benefits from an amnesty; a convicted criminal may now be released early under the new parole law. Who said we don't treat criminals with kid gloves? Some might think crime is worth the small risk of imprisonment. Only the innocent who would neve dream of committing a crime are at a disadvantage.

Home invasions and carjackings usually precede forced ATM withdrawals. This link is to an article about a very specific crime pattern called the "Express Kidnapping" which is basically an abduction and forced ATM withdrawal. It explains the details of how the crime pattern plays out, how to expose the data and most importantly, the details of how political corruption keeps the pattern from being tracked by the police. If you or someone you know was the victim of such a crime, read this and share it with everyone you know. Then send it to your local newspaper, news station, banker and legislator. Get them to investigate it. This applies worldwide, not just in the US. http://atmsafetypin.wordpress.com/2013/07/19/8/
