Magistrate reaches out to mother of drug addict
Magistrate seeks to console accused’s mother in explaining that her son’s actions were not her fault.
A magistrate today tried to reassure a troubled mother that her son's actions were not her fault.
Stefan Cutajar, 29 of Safi, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to various charges of theft. Cutajar has a drug problem and has committed various thefts during his suspended jail term.
Standing behind her son, the mother broke into tears when Magistrate Ian Farrugia said Cutajar would be remanded in custody "for his own good".
Turning to the mother, the magistrate expressed his understanding for the sorrow she felt.
"As a mother you will always be hurt by your son's actions. But you have to understand that this is not your fault. He is responsible for his action. The court understands he has a drug problem and has collaborated with the police, but he must also understand he has to change," the Magistrate said.
"He is no longer a little boy but a 29-year-old man. And I have to deal with him as an adult."
Cutajar was apprehended while driving a stolen car. He also stole a generator and other items from another vehicle. Cutajar was also charged with relapsing.
He was remanded in custody until the hearing.
Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Carol Fabri prosecuted.
