Tripoli man gets suspended sentence

Man was drunk and broke into wrong car

Abdulati Mohammed, 39, of Tripoli, Libya was handed a six-month jail term suspended for four years after pleading guilty to conspiring to steal a car.

The court heard that Mohammed broke into a Peugeot vehicle belonging to James Bezzina, as he returned from a football game in Gharghur on Wednesday.

Mohammed claimed he went into the vehicle because he was drunk and could barely see. He also admitted to causing damages worth €233 to the vehicle and relapsing.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale told off the Libyan man, saying that if he was arraigned again over charges of intoxication he would send him straight to prison. The court ordered that a probation officer help Mohammed kick his drinking habit.

Inspector Josric Mifsud prosecuted.
