Sant wins libel case over 2007 drunkard comments by Austin Gatt
Former Nationalist Minister Austin Gatt ordered to pay €1,000 in damages after court finds him guilty of slanderous comments.
A court presided by Magistrate Francesco Depasquale found former transport minister Austin Gatt guilty of having made false and defamatory allegations against then Opposition leader Alfred Sant in 2007.
In a speech during a 2007 PN general council, Gatt referred to Sant as a likely candidate for a Discovery Channel programme which documents world statesmen with alcohol and drug problems.
Sant said Gatt had attributed facts to him which were intended at offending his honour and reputation and to expose him to public ridicule.
The court noted that while Gatt had not directly stated Sant had a drinking or drug problem, his reference to the Discovery Channel programme was a clear innuendo.
Gatt has now been ordered to pay Sant €1,000 in damages.
