Libyan national gets mugged after defending Maltese man
Two foreigners are remanded in custody after denying they assaulted a Libyan national who defended a Maltese man they were mugging.
Ahmed Abdalla Yakoup, 26, of Palestine and residing at the Hal Far open centre and 34-year-old Somali national Omar Omar Osman, who resides in Floriana, were remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to mugging a Libyan national and a Maltese man on Wednesday.
Prosecuting inspector Godwin Scerri explained to the court how the accused had assaulted Justin Aquilina with the aim of stealing his belongings.
While the accused were mugging Aquilina, Essalami Hasheem was passing by and witnessed the assault. On seeing Aquilina being assaulted, he rushed to his aid, however ended up being mugged, suffering slight injuries. The incident happened at 10:30pm.
Osman informed the court that it was he who was assaulted by the victims, yet he ended in the dock. The court presided by Magistrate Anthony Vella ordered that the Somali is examined by medical court expert Mario Scerri.
Both the Palestinian and the Somali national pleaded not guilty and Magistrate Anthony Vella remanded them in custody.
Police inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted while legal aid Simon Micallef Stafrace appeared for the accused.
