Six football fans accused of involvement in brawl

Six youths granted bail after pleading not guilty to getting embroiled in fight between rival football fans.

Six youths were today granted bail after pleading not guilty to taking part in a brawl at Naxxar following a football game in which Naxxar lost to Mosta by the score of 4-2.

Nathaniel Vella, 22 and his brother Josiah Vella, 19, of St Paul´s Bay, Wayne Debono, 20 and his 17-year-old brother, Jean-Paul Spiteri, 19, and another 17-year-old, all from Mosta were accused of provoking and getting involved in a fight with Naxxar fans.

The incident happened on 28 September and all six were also accused with threatening, assault and disturbing the peace.

One of the accused, Neil Chetcuti was accused of slightly injuring David Azzopardi during the fight.

People at the Naxxar Square informed the police officer that Azzopardi had been hit with a metal bar. They also claimed that a petard was set off inside the square.

However, prosecuting inspector Josric Mifsud said that police investigations analysed CCTV footage and the claims could not be confirmed.

Magistrate Anthony Vella granted the accused bail. Lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for the accused.
