Police foil spectacular bank robbery

The police today discovered a 15-metre underground tunnel in a garage in Swieqi which was intended to reach the vaults of an HSBC branch in Triq Sant'Andrija, Swieqi, however no arrests have been made.

The Rapid Intervention Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department discovered the tunnel after weeks of intensive investigations, the police said.

The initial investigations were carried out after the police were tipped off about preparations for a bank robbery in Swieqi, situated a few metres away from the residence of education minister Evarist Bartolo.

Following the investigations the police discovered the 15-metre tunnel which is over a metre wide and a 1.5 metres high. The tunnel was dug in a garage which is found in a complex in Triq il-Qatta, Swieqi.

The tunnel was dug beneath Triq it-Tiben wand was only a few metres short of the bank vaults. The police added that the plotters' intent was to break through the vaults and carry the money through the tunnel.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli ordered an inquiry while the police are still trying to identify the persons behind the plot.
