Former Labour club barman acquitted of injuring man
Former barman acquitted of grievously injuring a man at the Labour party club in Attard in 2009.
Richard Vella, 40 of Attard, was acquitted of grievously injuring John Bonnici at the PL club in Attard, during a fight in 2009.
Vella had also claimed that PL deputy leader Toni Abela had used his influence for charges over the incident to be delayed. Abela had categorically denied the allegation that came right in the middle of the 2013 electoral campaign.
The bar fight took place in October 2009 late in the evening between the victim - John Bonnici - and the accused. The two had filed police reports against each other.
The argument started when Bonnici accused Vella of addressing the club's president in a derogatory manner. Vella allegedly pushed Bonnici on the floor who broke a finger.
An orthopedic surgeon confirmed the fracture was compatible with a fall and Bonnici had to undergo three operations and was still suffering from a 5% disability.
On the other hand, Vella claimed that Bonnici hurt his hand after he barged back into the bar, hitting the door in the process and ending up on the floor.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli acquitted Vella over lack of evidence and conflicting testimonies. Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted and defence lawyer Edward Gatt appeared for the accused.
Vella had also claimed he had a recording in which Abela tried to exert pressure on the police not to press charges.
