Drug addict caught red-handed and jailed for relapsing

Court jails a relapsing offender for 25 months after he was caught stealing from a hotel room.

Silvio Camilleri, 29 of Gzira was jailed for 25 months after pleading guilty to various thefts from hotel rooms in St Julian’s.

Last July, the accused stole a Nikon D90 photographic camera together with a handbag and other documents from a room in La Vallette Hotel.

Two days later, the youth was caught red handed stealing other items from a separate room in the same hotel.

The accused, who admitted he has a drug problem, was also charged with handling stolen property and breaching a probation order.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke pointed out the man has already been given several opportunities to address his bad habits, but he refused to change his ways.

The Magistrate handed Camilleri a 14-month jail term for the charges of theft. Moreover the accused was jailed a further 11 months following his breach of probation order.

The court recommended a drug rehabilitation programme and the professional services of a social worker for the accused.
