Suspended prison sentence for maid’s €50,000 gold theft

Criminal court bans publication of Gozitan maid’s name who pleads guilty to stealing €50,000 in gold from home she worked in.

A 28-year-old woman of Xemxija, Gozo was handed a two-year jail term suspended for four, after pleading guilty to stealing gold from a residence where she worked as a maid.

Prosecuting inspector Sarah Magri told the court that on 20 November, the owners of a Gozo residence claimed their maid had stolen over €50,000 worth in gold from their residence. However, while pleading guilty to the theft, the accused insisted she sold the gold for a couple of hundred euros. The person who bought the gold from the maid was identified and is expected to be arraigned in the coming days.

The inspector explained that the accused was going through difficult financial times due to civil proceedings she is currently facing. The officer stated the woman had cooperated with the investigators and admitted to the charges.

Defence lawyer Roberto Montalto requested the court to ban the publication of the accused's name, particularly due to the same civil proceedings.

The court upheld the request of the defence and handed the woman a two-year prison term suspended for four years.
