Two Polish nationals convicted of trafficking heroin
Two Polish nationals imprisoned for eight and nine years, and fined €23,000 each after pleading guilty to importing over 700 grams of heroin.
Bartosz Jacek Goldzinski and Weronika Jakubowska were respectively imprisoned for nine and eight years and fined €23,000 each after pleading guilty to importing over 700 grams of heroin back in 2011.
The two Polish nationals arrived in Malta on 3 October 2011 onboard flight KM479 from Brussels. Acting on information received from the Customs Department, Drug Squad Police apprehended the two foreigners as they disembarked.
Goldzinski informed the police he had swallowed 92 capsules containing heroin, while Jakubowska carried a single but much larger capsule in her vagina.
The capsules were found to contain 764.49 grams of 2.1% pure heroin, with a street value of €55,852. Further investigations revealed the two were offered a considerable sum of money.
The Attorney General's office demanded a life sentence, however when arraigned in court on 5 December last year the two Poles had reached a plea bargain agreement and admitted to charges of drug trafficking.
Magistrate Lawrence Quintano imprisoned Bartosz Jacek Goldzinski for nine years while Weronika Jakubowska was handed an eight years jail term. The convicted were also fined €23,000 each and ordered to pay the total sum of €1462.63 in court fees.
