Motorist charged of injuring pedestrian
A man driving to work in the early hours of today was granted bail after pleading not guilty to dangerous and negligent driving, over speeding and grievously injuring a pedestrian.
Charles Fenech, 23 of St.Paul's Bay, was granted bail after pleading not guilty to infringing various articles of the traffic regulations and injuring a pedestrian.
The accused, who works behind a cheese counter of a supermarket, was driving to his work when he hit a pedestrian. The incident happened at around 6:30 am in San Gwann, following heavy rain in the day's early hours.
The accused was charged with dangerous and negligent driving, over speeding, grievously injuring Gaetano Zahra and refusing to give his details to police officers.
Defence lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran held the accused was not guilty of the charges and requested bail.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Trevor Micallef did not object to bail and stated the case could easily be concluded in a single sitting.
Magistrate Francesco Depasquale granted Fenech bail against a deposit of €300 and a personal guarantee of €5000. Explaining the bail condition to the accused, the Magistrate informed him of the dire consequences he will face if he breaches bail.
