Two migrants jailed after being caught travelling without documents
Two Nigerian migrants arrested in Switzerland without travel documents are jailed for three months, after pleading guilty to the charges
Two Nigerian men were today jailed after admitting to absconding from Malta and travelling without being in possession of valid travel documents.
Mohammed Ivacor, 19 born in Agimanena, and Henry Iyiegbu, 29 born in the Anambara State, were apprehended in Switzerland and investigations revealed that they had no travelling documents. The two were returned to Malta when the Swiss authorities were informed that the two Nigerian migrants had arrived in Malta in November 2013 and February 2012 respectively.
Questioned by the court Iyiegbu said he is not sure if his father is dead or alive, as he had lost contact with him after leaving his native land. While doing occasional petty jobs like painting and tiling, Iyiegbu considered himself unemployed. He claimed he could not recall the details of his residence in Msida. Answering the same questions, Ivacor said he is currently unemployed and lives at the Marsa Open Centre. Both pleaded guilty as charged.
Noting the accused’s guilty plea, Magistrate Doreen Clarke decreed that both are imprisoned for three months.
Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri prosecuted while legal-aid lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for the accused.
