Drug addict reprimanded over pastizzeria theft
Court hands 33-year-old man two year probation period for stealing wallet containing €500
A 33-year-old man from Cospicua was this morning placed under a two year probation period after admitting to stealing a wallet containing €500 from a pastizzeria in Sliema.
The court heard how last Sunday, the accused, Charlot Haidon, went behind the counter at Maxman Pastizzeria in Sliema. He then asked the pastizzeria employee, Joseph Cassar, for some pastizzi and a beer.
It was at this point that Haidon stole a wallet containing €500 in cash.
Upon discovering his missing wallet, the victim lodged a police report at the Sliema police station, telling the police that no one except Haidon went behind the counter, and that consequently, he suspected that it was him who stole the wallet.
“As soon as he left, I noticed that my wallet was missing. No one goes behind the counter, and I immediately suspected it was Charlo, more so because of his drug problems,” he told police.
The accused was subsequently summoned to the police station, where he admitted to stealing the wallet. He also admitted that he has a drug problem. Haidon also told the police that he is ready to pay the money back to the victim.
Taking into account his guilty plea, Magistrate Neville Camilleri handed the man a two year probation period.
Inspector Jason Francis Sultana prosecuted.
