Reformed addict in hospital altercation gets probation

32-year-old man who went to hospital complaining of swollen genitals placed on probation order after admitting to assaulting and slightly injuring a nurse and a security guard.

A man who went to Mater Dei complaining of swollen genitals has been placed on a probation order for two years after admitting to assaulting and slightly injuring a nurse and a security guard at Mater Dei Hospital.

The incident occurred on 8 May 2013, when the accused, Johan Sultana, 32, of Santa Venera, went to hospital complaining of swollen genitals. An altercation ensued, and Sultana threatened and slightly injured security officer Richard Seguna, and nurse Andrew Grech.

Seguna suffered slight scratches, while Grech was grabbed by the neck and pushed.

Standing before Magistrate Josette Demicoli, Sultana admitted to 14 charges, including threatening, harassing and assaulting public officers, relapsing, breaching public peace, and swearing.

In his pre-sentencing report, probation officer Gordon Grech said that the accused, a reformed drug addict, improved his behavioural problems when it comes to his fiery temper.

Taking Grech’s report into account, the court presided noted that the man had apologised to his victims and improved his behaviour. She consequently placed him under a probation order for two years.

Inspector Jason Francis Sultana prosecuted.
